With the campaign finance reports due last week, it’s time
to see how well the primaried House Republicans did during the six months
between July 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013. Overall, they did quite well. The
table provides the details:

The average money raised by the twenty-two Republican
incumbents was $126,931. Stefani Carter, who flirted with running for Railroad
Commissioner before deciding to withdraw, raised the most money, and Debbie
Riddle raised the least money. More importantly, the average cash-on-hand for
the twenty-two Republicans was $217, 058, more than enough to adequately
compete in the primary election on March 4, 2014. Four incumbents had more than
one-half million dollars available (Byron Cook, John Otto, Susan King, and Drew
Darby). Two incumbents had more than one-quarter million dollars available (Jim
Keffer, and Angie Chen Button).
Few candidates spent much of the campaign treasure chests
during the period. Jim Keffer led the group with expenditures of $196, 830.
Only four other incumbents spent more than $100,000 (Matt Schaeffer, Stefani
Carter, Linda Harper Brown, and Jonathan Strickland).
Only one incumbent, Bennett Ratliff, took on a significant
loan during the period. Ratliff loaned his campaign $50,000. However,
significant outstanding loans are held by a few of the incumbents. For example,
Jonathan Strickland has $125,000 in outstanding loans.
In the next post, we'll look at how well the fundraising went for challengers to the incumbents.
